The disconnect between hip hop and the real world has never been greater than it is right now.
Hip Hop music used to be the barometer of what was going on in the street. If you wanted to hear the social ills of society you can hear it on a hip hop track. Conscience rap or gangsta rap they both gave you the real deal. Today? Not so much.
Occupy Wall Street birthed a global movement of discontent with not only wall street but all the injustices of society. And where is hip hop in all this? Barely visible and rarely heard.
Immortal Technique has been active in supporting and getting a proper message out. Talib Kweli has performed and been active. Lupe made an appearance. Bun B showed in Houston. Kanye West showed up one day…and said nothing. That is hip hops contribution so far to the movement. Some genuine support and a couple PR visits. Sad. And still no one touches the movement lyrically.
Could it be everyone in hip hop is striving to be in that 1% that has been taking down the worlds economy? Could it be everyone in hip hop wants a corporate sponsorship so bad they won’t say a word? So you’re telling me all the aspiring broke ass rappers in the U.S. haven’t been effected by this horrible economy? No one has lost a job, lost a house, lost wages in the last few years?
History is being made right this very second. Its a perfect time for hip hop to step up to the plate and push the “Occupy” movement to the next level. While everyone talks about the BET awards the rich get richer and hip hop still doesn’t have a clue.
